How do Facebook, my little sister, and my pedicure connect for a compelling email that can change the course of your business?
Last week, I was given a fabulous massage gift certificate at the Red Door Spa in Phoenix. Since I was there already, and indulging in the facilities, I decided to also treat myself to a pedicure.
I tend to choose my polish by name, and when the manicurist pointed me to a certain area she was excited about, I selected none other than “Miss Fancy Pants.”
As I relaxed with my coffee and let her take care of me, I settled in to the idea of being Miss Fancy Pants.
Because that is how I felt. The salon was beautiful and I was treating myself well, enjoying the wonderful life opportunities I’ve created for myself, which have become consistent now rather than a rare indulgent treat.
And that is just not something that was done in my world growing up.
In fact, being some version of Miss Fancy Pants (aka Who-Do-You-Think-You-Are Pants) caused my sister to stop speaking to me, and even un-friend me on Facebook because I made a decision that didn’t sit well with her.
I made a decision to put myself first.
While not the acceptable norm in my family of origin it’s something I’ve been practicing this year, because as CEO of a business that doubles every year and pays several people, quite frankly, I need to.
But it’s more than that. I’m in a mission-driven business. I care deeply about the work I do. And that kind of business is the world’s best personal development seminar.
Here’s what I’ve come to believe about people like us:
- In the beginning we want to change other people… to fix what’s wrong with them.
- Then we get really inspired and want to change the world… fix the whole deal.
- Then we realize that to change the world, we have to change our own world… which often makes the people around us highly uncomfortable.
- Then our world starts to change to reflect who we’re becoming, and we don’t understand our world anymore… and we become highly uncomfortable. (Note, in order to get this far, we’ve gotten pretty used to being uncomfortable!)
- Then, if we don’t revert back, if we can stay with the discomfort long enough to allow our Truth to fully emerge, we become who really are. And we look around and notice we’re a leader. And we get present to the immense responsibility that goes with that position, yet we cannot retreat because it’s just who we are. So we continue stepping forward on faith, trusting that the right resource, the right perspective, the right intuition, and the right guidance will come to us, every time. Even when it’s scary and even when the bulk of the world can’t quite see where we’re heading, and we worry we’re all alone on the skinny branches of life.
Sound familiar?
I know it well. And the heartbreaker?
Somewhere between steps four and five, most entrepreneurs lose their way. And here’s the main reason why:
They are afraid to be Miss Fancy Pants.
They don’t want to be judged, or viewed as self-important.
Because they’ve got too much to lose.
So they put someone else’s opinion, judgment, or perspective above their own Truth, and buy into old rules for marketing, for selling, or for what it means to be a “good person,” so they can stay safe.
See, I used to believe that the world would work if we could all just be ourselves without judgment.
But the Truth is that the world would work if we all made ourselves important enough to give ourselves what we need to be happy and fulfilled, whether or not we are judged.
Judgment gets no traction when we heal our wounds and stop looking for someone else to make us happy and fulfilled – including our clients!
If you can go there, your business would get really REAL, and you would get really WEALTHY.
You would be UNSTOPPABLE. Confidently swinging from the skinny branches, shouting your message clearly and decidedly.
Sure, you’ll be judged. To some you’ll look crazy.
But to that 10% of people in your world who are just dying for someone to have the RAW courage to step up and lead this mission, it will be their lucky-freaking-day.
Here’s the thing. You’re that person, Miss Fancy Pants.
(Or Mr. if you like it).
